Barium Swallow

Purpose
A barium swallow, also known as an esophagogram, is an examination performed primarily to evaluate the oesophagus – which is the food tract connecting the mouth with the stomach. This is usually done when you have symptoms such as heartburn, pain or difficulty with swallowing.
Preparation
No preparation is required.
Procedure
The examination takes approximately 10-15 minutes, and requires swallowing approximately 1 cupful of a barium solution. Barium solution is a liquid “contrast” that enables the radiographer to see an X-ray more clearly. Images will be taken in various positions.
After Procedure
You may continue normal activity. As the barium may be constipating, a mild laxative should be taken.
