Breast Imaging Services
Cape Radiology offers a dedicated Woman’s Imaging Department. It is supported by dedicated Breast Imaging Radiologists and specially trained Mammographers, and incorporates state of the art imaging technology.
Services on offer include Digital Mammography, Breast Ultrasound, Breast MRI, Ultrasound guided Breast Biopsies and MRI guided Breast Biopsies.
Digital Mammography
This is an X-ray technique which uses very low dose X-rays for imaging of the breasts. All women over the age of 40 should have an annual mammogram.
During a mammogram, an expert radiographer will compress both breasts between two special X-ray plates, one at a time. This can sometimes be uncomfortable, but only lasts for a few seconds.
Ultrasound is used in many cases as an additional examination, to determine the nature of abnormalities detected on mammography or for added information in those women who have very dense breast tissue.
There is no evidence that mammography itself is dangerous or can produce cancer.

Breast MRI
All women with a family history of breast cancer should have an MRI breast screening examination annually. It is recommended that MRI breast screening commences five (5) years before the age at which the relative was diagnosed with breast cancer.
MRI of your breasts involves lying on your stomach in the MRI Tunnel for approximately 30 minutes. Intravenous contrast media will be injected into your arm or hand via a drip – which optimises the scan. If you are claustrophobic, a safe intravenous sedation can be given.

Breast Ultrasound
A breast ultrasound is an ionising radiation free examination. It is a simple, safe and non-invasive method of evaluating the breast tissue.
It is often done adjunct to a mammography – particularly in women with dense breast tissue. And is also a safe means of assessing younger women who are not yet at the appropriate age for a routine mammography (below 40 years of age).
No preparation is required for this examination. For the ultrasound you will be required to lie on a bed next to an ultrasound machine. The radiologist or sonographer will apply a jelly to the skin surface to improve contact between the ultrasound transducer and the skin. The ultrasound transducer will then be moved smoothly and painlessly over the skin surface. Alternatively, an ABUS (Automated Breast Ultrasound) can be performed. Depending on the clinical circumstances, an examination may last from 5 to 20 minutes.
